The 1.5 inch heavy load optical posts with base developed by OMTOOLS are sturdy and durable, and applicable for the most routine laboratory applications. Machined from steel, the posts are designed with a diameter of 38 mm and a height of 365 mm or 500 mm, and used with PSAT76D post clamps. The steel features the material loss factor of larger order of magnitudes, so its dynamic stiffness is far larger than that of aluminium. This leads to a high resonant frequency and a relatively low vibration amplitude required by optics laboratories. Moreover, the inherent higher rigidity and strength allow the posts to carry larger loads and deliver excellent stability. The steel structure also has other advantages such as the coefficient of thermal expansion that is half that of aluminium, and higher thermal capacity, leading to the possibility of improved thermal stability.
