The 1.5 inch heavy load optical posts developed by OMTOOLS are sturdy and durable and applicable for the most of routine laboratory applications. Machined from steel, the posts are designed with a diameter of 38 mm and a height of 365 mm or 500 mm. With racks built in the posts, the posts can be raised using the gear-rack control units when using together with the PSAT76C post clamps. The steel features the material loss factor of larger order of magnitudes, so its dynamic stiffness is far larger than that of aluminium. This leads to a high resonant frequency and a relatively low vibration amplitude required by optics laboratories. Moreover, the inherent higher rigidity and strength allow the posts to carry larger loads and deliver excellent stability. The steel structure also has other advantages such as the coefficient of thermal expansion that is half that of aluminium, and higher thermal capacity, leading to the possibility of improved thermal stability.
